Rotary Engravers
« on: November 14, 2017, 02:41:00 PM »

I am looking to do some rotary engraving on Aluminium. Something that is depth adjustable, good bit with small letter and number templates. Does anyone have any thoughts they would pass along? I am not interested in the CNC setups as my technical skills are severally limited.

The CNC ones should be easy and user friendly. Pick the tool, set your X, Y and Z zeroes, pick the depth and type in your engraving. Make sure to home and push the green button.

As far as depth goes on aluminum, maybe .003" to .01", keep in mind that that deeper you go, the more the material will push up.

Is this a router type thingy or just set depth and do by hand?

Another thing, CNC ones control the feeds and speeds, too. Consistency.

I was hoping to KISS. , along with some type of micrometer to adjust the depth (.003) of cut. I suppose I need to do a bit more research. In regards to CNC, perhaps MR. Freefall will have some words of Alaskan wisdom.

CNC stuff now days is KISS. And getting more affordable. If you have questions, just ask. Glad to help.

But, if I had a steady enough gimp hand, I would use the hand held ones and set depth on some practice pieces. It does have to be the right and long lasting tool head. Aluminum will get gummy really fast without the proper feeds, speeds and tool. If the tool head gets gummed up the best way to take off the aluminum is with the edge of a modern penny. Don't scrape, "pop" it off.

Good information. Thanks for the reply. I believe I will try the handheld. To date I only have 7 pieces to engrave but who knows what the future may bring.
